Start: May 23 2008 - 4:00pm

End: May 26 2008 - 3:00pm

***Mandatory preparation for Sierra Trek***

This will be an excellent high-altitude adventure and a great work-up for The Yosemite
trek. Backpackers will be treated to spectacular views and varied terrain throughout the San Jacinto
Wilderness. On Friday, we will drive to Palm Springs and take the impressive tram up the mountain.
We’ll spend the night at Round Valley to adjust to the altitude. The next day, we will hike to the top of
San Jacinto (10,800 ft.) and then on to Strawberry Junction, covering about 9 miles. On Sunday, we’ll
hike at least 6 miles and camp in the Willow Creek area. On Monday, we’ll hike the 4 miles back to the
tram and head home. This will be a moderately strenuous route, most of it above 8000 feet. Take only
the minimum in order to keep pack weight down.

Troy Stofan 858-922-8020
Dick Kelly Cell: 858-663-5053

Be sure to download the attached documents for this outing.

Off-road Trail Drive and Borrego Caves - Camping

Start: Feb 15 2008 - 5:30pm

<span style="font-size: 11pt;" times="" new="" roman="" ;="">This will be an exciting off-road trip. We will start at the isolated “Canyon Sin Nombre”. High clearance vehicles are required to negotiate the twisting, turning, sandy wash as we wind our way though 9 million years of geologic upheavals and erosion along the Elsinore Fault. We will explore some of the more spectacular caves of Arroyo Tapiado in the Anza Borrego Desert State Park, and experience fabulous slot canyons that are narrow enough to touch the sides yet tower nearly 100 feet above.

<span style="font-size: 11pt;" times="" new="" roman="" ;="">This desert area is perfect for California winter recreation & is located near the south end of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park along S-2. Local mountains’ seismic forces created the fault that runs beneath this region & forces water up to the desert surface. A decent water supply also supports plant life & wildlife. Bow Willow is a primitive campground that has shade structures at each site. Water is available at a central location, but must be treated prior to consumption (boiled or filtered).

<span style="font-size: 11pt;" times="" new="" roman="" ;="">Winter in the desert can be very cold, so plan accordingly. Layering warm clothes with a windproof/waterproof layer on the outside is very effective for keeping warm. Consider adding a blanket or liner to your sleeping bag if you have a light one. Nighttime lows can range in the 30’s and 40’s. Daytime highs can range from the 50’s to the 80’s. This will be a “fair weather only” campout. Because the primary activity is traveling through washes and caves created by rain flood waters, if there is even the threat of rain, we will reschedule this outing for another weekend.

This is going to be a great adventure combining off-road driving and cave exploration along with car camping. Don't miss this one!

Please note date change from original calendar.

Granite Springs, Cuyamaca - Backpacking

Start: Jan 19 2008 - 8:00am

End: Jan 20 2008 - 2:00pm

This outing is intended to continue to give scouts an opportunity to add miles to
their backpacking experience and to continue to hone their skills. This outing is primarily for
intermediate backpackers. We'll park the cars at the parking lot outside the presently closed
Green Valley Camp Ground in the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park at Sweetwater River Bridge. We
will hike 5.5 miles to our primitive campsite, Granite Springs . The hike gains approximately
1000 feet in elevation to 5,000 feet the first day and descends the second day while traveling
another 5 miles for a total of 10.5 miles. This has been called the “grand tour” by San Diego
naturalists, centering around the states second largest designated wilderness area. This area also
possibly supports the counties largest deer herd.
Eat breakfast at home. Bring your own lunch to eat along the trail. Dinner will be backpacking
food, (patrol meals). In the morning, we'll enjoy a backpacker's breakfast, do a few things, break
camp, eat lunch at a restaurant on the way home.
CONTACT PERSON: Troy Stofan PHONE: 858-922-8020 e-mail: tstofan@cox.net
Beginning Backpacking - Oriflamme Canyon

Start: Nov 17 2007 - 7:30am

This outing is a joint outing with Venture Crew 11, and offers an opportunity for
those Scouts and adults who are relatively new to backpacking and wish to refresh their
backpacking skills in an easy fun setting. It is also a chance for the more experienced Scouts to
enjoy an easy backpack and share their experience and knowledge.

Oriflamme Canyon is the gateway from the mountains to the Desert. Originally used by Pedro Fages when he led a military expedition from the San Diego Presidio in search of deserters. Later this canyon provided the access needed to the desert for the Jackass Mail route east. Eventually, other routes openedbetween the mountains and the desert, but the history of Oriflamme remains.

Normally, this canyon has water running year-round. Because of the extremely dry weather this last year, Oriflamme Creek is dry, so we will provide a water cache at the site.

Contact Troy Stofan for details

Mountain Biking - Canceled due to fire

Start: Nov 3 2007 - 8:00am

This event has been canceled. The Lake Hodges area sustained heavy damage due to fires and is not usable at this time. The air quality in the county is still considered unhealthy for this type of activity. We will plan to reschedule this bike ride in another location at a later date. Stay tuned for updates.

<strike>This 14-mile singletrack trail is perfect for our beginning mountain bike experience. Situated in
a beautiful coastal canyon, the area surrounding Lake Hodges offers a trail system ideal to
introductory mountain-biking, while providing challenges for the more experienced as well.
Varying terrain includes streams, lush river valleys, canopied oak forests, and arid rocky open
areas. Rolling trails with challenging off-shoots provide enjoyment for bicyclists of all abilities.
Scouts will come away with a new perspective of the many coastal canyons which make up
much of the Southern California coastline. A truly memorable experience.
</strike>

<strike>CONTACT PERSON: Solveig Deuprey: (H) 858-259-7165; (W) 619-757-1903
Email: sdeuprey@deupreylaw.com</strike>
