This document outlines the process for earning a merit badge.
Steps For Earning A Merit Badge
The process for earning a merit badge is outlined on page 187 of the scout handbook. Here are the Troop 11 specific instructions. The steps are:
- Get a signed blue card from the Scoutmaster filled out with the specific merit badge info for the merit badge you are interested in. At this point, the Scoutmaster may advise the scout about pursuing the specific merit badge. (Mrs. Herbert usually has the merit badge blue cards and the list of merit badge counselors. She can also sign the blue cards for the Scoutmaster.)
- With another scout, friend, or family member, contact the merit badge counselor and arrange your first meeting. Do not go alone! The merit badge counselor may recommend multiple meetings and a plan for completing the merit badge.
- Complete the requirements for the badge and have the counselor complete and sign the blue card.
- (This one is not in the book, but is very important.) When the blue card has been completely filled in and signed by the merit badge counselor, the counselor will keep 1/3 of the card. Turn the other 2/3 of the card in to the advancement chairperson (Mrs. Bittle) ASAP.
- (This one is also not in the book.) At the next court of honor, the merit badge will be presented with the 1/3 of the blue card that the recipient is to keep. Be sure to keep this card as it (not the badge) is your record of completing the merit badge.
Generally, a merit badge counselor will not start a merit badge with a scout without a signed blue card in hand. This may not be the case for group organized events. If at all possible, get the blue card signed by the Scoutmaster ahead of time. It could be rejected otherwise.
