05 / 26 (Event) San Jacinto - Sierra Trek workup End: 3:00 pm Start: May 23 2008 - 4:00pm End: May 26 2008 - 3:00pm *Mandatory preparation for Sierra Trek* This will be an excellent high-altitude adventure and a great work-up for The Yosemite trek. Backpackers will be treated to spectacular views and varied terrain throughout the San Jacinto Wilderness. On Friday, we will drive to Palm Springs and take the impressive tram up the mountain. We’ll spend the night at Round Valley to adjust to the altitude. The next day, we will hike to the top of San Jacinto (10,800 ft.) and then on to Strawberry Junction, covering about 9 miles. On Sunday, we’ll hike at least 6 miles and camp in the Willow Creek area. On Monday, we’ll hike the 4 miles back to the tram and head home. This will be a moderately strenuous route, most of it above 8000 feet. Take only the minimum in order to keep pack weight down. 06 / 21 (Event) La Jolla Snorkel - Day Trip Start: 7:30 am End: 10:30 am This snorkel trip will start at the famous La Jolla Cove where we will observe some of the abundant and colorful sea life within the La Jolla Marine Preserve and explore one of the most picturesque of the La Jolla Caves, which is open at both ends. This trip will involve swimming a total distance of 1/3 mile (with fins). Participants must have previously passed the BSA Swim Test. Before entering the water we will be sure everyone has their gear fitted properly, then we will review some basic snorkeling skills and safely rules and determine dive buddies. We will have kayak escort during the entire event. Scouts must bring their own properly fitting snorkel gear. A springsuit/wetsuit is strongly recommended and will be required if the ocean water temperature drops below 66 degrees. If poor sea conditions develop, this event will be canceled.
